Autumn!

Hello again, everyone!

Ah, yes! It's that time again! The days are getting shorter and the
heat of the summer sun is beginning to subside.

And so, on that note, I wanted to wish everyone a happy belated
Lunasagh! And for those who don't know about this day, it is the
traditional first day of fall and the harvest. It's held every year
on August first and heralds the coming cool of autumn.

I know your all thinking, "What in the world is this girl on about?!
Talking about autumn and cold when I'm getting ready for my picnic or
a day at the beach?" Well, as farmers and gardeners, we have to face
the fact that the autumn is another busy time for us (fixing the soil
for next year, making farm repairs, last minute harvests, ect.)
before the (reletive) calm of winter. So I'm just giving you some
heads up before you get caught unawares.

Speaking of fall, this is also an excellent time to start your last
crop of the season. All of your short-termed, cool weather crops,
like peas, spinich, lettuce, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and all your
root plants can be planted now and be ready (usually!) in time for
the frost. So you still have time for some fresh veggies!

Just giving everyone a quick notice and wishing you all beautiful
flowers and fair weather!

Wow, Look at all the Zucchini!

Well, it's that time.

When all of the zucchini and tomatos are going crazy and producing like mad! So far, we've had over nine zucchini in the last four days that we've had to either give away or find new recipies for. And of course, I had to have one hide on me and get huge, about eight inches around and about fifteen inches long. Evil little buggers.

My tomatos are starting to really grow and flourish. I started them late in the year, mid-june as seeds, so I'm really suprised that they're doing so well. What really help though was the cow manure compost we got from our neighbor. We were lucky because he gave it to us for free as long as we carted it away If you ever get a chance, find yourself a cow farmer and ask, in the spring, if you could take some, even if you have buy it. It's great stuff!

My herbs are also going crazy (thanks again to the afore mentioned compost) and I've had some of the best lemon balm and mint teas I've ever tasted. Of course, I've never had fresh tea before but it is sooo much better than dried. Believe me!

But that's about all for now. I hope to have some pictures up and running soon so keep us bookmarked and check back.

May your harvests be bountiful!

Welcome to Small Michigan Hobby Farms!

Hello and Welcome, everyone!

This page is being use by the owner of a small hobby farm (Me) in the back wood of Michigan. I would also like some feed back from others who are small farmers, too, and would be willing to lend some advice to some people who are just starting out.

Thanks for stopping by, sorry the beginning was so short but more will be coming.

Please come back and check us out again.

Thanks again,

Karynn
